Colombian President Declares 'I Shall Resort to Weapons Again' should United States Invades.

The US President along with Colombia's president have turned up the volume of their war of words, further raising tensions between the two countries following US forces attacked Venezuela with the aim of deposing Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro from office.

"He runs narcotics facilities and production sites and his time is running out," the US president stated.

Escalating Threats and Accusations

Speaking to the press on Sunday, the US president suggested comparable military action towards the South American nation, asserting the nation is “very sick too” and governed by a problematic figure who likes making narcotics and distributing it to America."

While Colombia remains the globe's biggest producer of cocaine, no proof exists linking President Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is personally tied to the trade.

A Frayed Alliance

This nation was historically a staunch collaborator of the US in the struggle against drug trafficking and benefited from bipartisan support in the US capital, yet ties have deteriorated markedly following Trump assumed the presidency.

Colombia’s illicit drug economy is predominantly run by guerrilla factions such as one major cartel, the National Liberation Army (ELN) and dissident factions of the former Farc guerrillas, most of its former fighters disbanded subsequent to a historic peace agreement.

Petro's Defiant Answer

Upon being questioned whether armed intervention like that in Venezuela was on the cards for Colombia, Trump replied: "I like the sound of that to me personally."

President Petro, an ex-guerrilla fighter who left armed struggle in the 1990s, rejected Trump's claims. "I am no illegitimate and certainly not involved in narcotics," he affirmed.

"He comments without knowledge. Stop slandering me," he wrote in a post.

"If they [the US] bomb peasants, they will transform into thousands of guerrillas in the mountains. And if they detain me, which a significant portion of the country loves and respects, they will provoke the ‘jaguar’ of the populace," the president cautioned.

From Fighter to Statesman

Petro spent part of his youth as a member of the leftist M-19 armed organization although reports indicate he did not took part in armed clashes. Following his disarmament, he was involved in drafting a new constitution in 1991 and later became an influential politician. He was mayor of the capital city prior to his election the nation's highest office.

"I pledged not to touch arms again ... but in defense of my country I shall resume weapons once more," he vowed.

Heightened Measures along with Broad Rejection

Minister Pedro Sánchez reported that the president’s personal security had received additional support.

Several members of Colombia’s right wing opposition have sided with Trump, but voices from across the political spectrum have denounced the possibility of a US attack targeting Colombia.

Diplomatic and Financial Sanctions

The US cancelled his travel authorization subsequent to he called on US troops to disobey orders that violate law. In October, it placed asset freezes on Petro, the first lady and various associates.

Simultaneously as the US increased its forces in the region and striking vessels thought to carry drugs against Venezuela’s Maduro, US forces executed attacks on maritime targets in Pacific waters off the Colombian coast.
